SHOW OVERVIEW

Philip lindeman

Philip Lindeman is a Utrecht-based illustrator and artist who uses humor and playfulness to build detailed, tangible worlds. His work reveals a fictional reality in which everyday situations feel both familiar and strange — populated by colourful characters, unexpected turns, and small winks for the attentive viewer.

Curatorial statement

For this exhibition, that universe turns its attention to the street. Philip builds a version of city life assembled from fragments — a corner store light left on, cats asleep on a warm step, a toast raised for no particular reason. Humans, animals, plants, street lamps, bottles and any object that seems to refuse to sit still. Night shops, stray cats, window shoppers and figures from another world lost in translation. Half tourist and half local, looking for a connection he can’t quite name.

There’s celebration in these paintings, tradition, and a fair amount of mystery. The same ingredients, really, that show up in most good folk tales, wherever they’re from. Philip leans into that overlap deliberately, letting the work sit somewhere between a hangover and a haunting, between a souvenir stand and a superstition – open 24/7 for anyone still looking for one more nightcap.

Alongside Philip’s illustration practice, he explores that same universe through painting and sculpture — tangible materials that let him work more freely and experimentally than the precision of illustration allows. This body of work is no exception: built with the same appetite for play at L44 Space, and the same trust that a world only fully reveals itself once you’ve started making it.

PLANNING

OPEN 24/7 by Philip Lindeman was nearly two months in the making, a period of close collaboration between the artist and L44 that spanned planning, preparation and production. We invited Philip to transform L44 entirely, treating both the outdoor murals and the gallery space as his canvas.

The process began with a brief we prepared for Philip, drawing on local culture, traditions, architecture and craft. This became his starting point for exploration. From there, the brainstorming moved from a broad set of ideas towards a focused concept, refined step by step into the final shape of the show.

Philip's proactive, curious approach proved central to the project. He was continually seeking out new mediums and ideas, and this openness allowed the exhibition to extend across a far wider range of disciplines than first planned.

PRODUCTION PROCESS

Production at L44 took just under two weeks. Working alongside a team of assistants, Philip developed the murals and the exhibition in parallel, moving between the walls and the exhibition artworks.

In that time, he created two medium-to-large sculptures, ten smaller objects and three original paintings, while completing more than 100 m² of murals across the outdoor walls and the gallery.

Glimpses of the process follow below.

The murals

Each year, the murals at L44 are repainted by a new artist, covering roughly 80 m² of outdoor wall space. Every edition is developed in close collaboration with the invited artist, with each stage planned in detail from the first sketch to the final wall.

Entering from the street, visitors are greeted by a wall of approximately 14 metres, the first work to meet the eye. Its architecture naturally divides it into separate sections, and rather than working against this structure, the design embraces it. Treating each segment as its own panel opens up the possibility of exploring different scenes and situations across the length of the wall.

A second wall waits inside the garden. Tucked slightly out of view, it rewards those who go looking, and the sense of discovery becomes part of the experience. For this edition, Philip carried the same sectional approach through to the garden wall, breaking the composition into distinct panels that read clearly at close range, where the space invites viewers to stand.

Animation

Where the opportunity arises, L44 extends its exhibitions into animation through a collaboration with Lobster Studio, bringing the exhibiting artist's illustrations to life in motion.

For this show, we worked with Philip to create two short animated loops, each based on an illustration produced for the exhibition.

The animations then moved off the screen and into print. We produced a limited-edition set of flipbooks, alongside giclée art prints that come alive through augmented reality when viewed with the Aria app.
