For this exhibition, that universe turns its attention to the street. Philip builds a version of city life assembled from fragments — a corner store light left on, cats asleep on a warm step, a toast raised for no particular reason. Humans, animals, plants, street lamps, bottles and any object that seems to refuse to sit still. Night shops, stray cats, window shoppers and fi gures from another world lost in translation. Half tourist and half local, looking for a connection he can’t quite name.

There’s celebration in these paintings, tradition, and a fair amount of mystery. The same ingredients, really, that show up in most good folk tales, wherever they’re from. Philip leans into that overlap deliberately, letting the work sit somewhere between a hangover and a haunting, between a souvenir stand and a superstition – open 24/7 for anyone still looking for one more nightcap.

Alongside Philip’s illustration practice, he explores that same universe through painting and sculpture — tangible materials that let him work more freely and experimentally than the precision of illustration allows. This body of work is no exception: built with the same appetite for play at L44 Space, and the same trust that a world only fully reveals itself once you’ve started making it.
