ABOUT THE SHOW
ДЕСЕТ (Deset), meaning “ten” in Bulgarian, is the essence of his month-long stay in Sofia. Using the city as a kind of living archive, Turrell has explored markets, bookstores, antique shops, and hidden corners—seeking out stories, symbols, and signs that speak to the soul of the city. From this, five central themes emerged: buildings, objects, books, vinyl records, and photographs. In each category, he collected ten items, which he then transformed into five large-scale collage works.
Within these pieces, familiar Bulgarian figures and landmarks—such as Buzludzha, Lili Ivanova, and others—are reimagined through Turrell’s vivid lens. Socialist-era iconography is mashed up with Western pop culture tropes, creating surreal hybrids that feel both intimate and universal. The result is a visual world where punk aesthetics meet glamour, and where history is reinterpreted through the language of collage.
